Folks have to resort to those sort of launching techniques when they do not have paddles or a motor :D

Wow... hard to believe that little canoe kept floating with all those kids in it. Bet that water's cold! :(

How do we know we're getting old, all we're thinking about is how bad the outcome was going to be. With the young nowadays, it seemed the girls were quicker to hop in the canoe vs the guys not thinking about the potential outcome.

I knew where it was headed. I was sure it would just nosedive into the water. Surprised it didn't. I think they were lucky. They do not even look like they got splashed.

PDF w ouldn't have mattered, except for body recovery ... Hypothermia would have overtaken them in no time... Cringed watching that ...

A few more feet to the left and they might have sank the bow. I think the ledge gave the lift they needed. It was just slightly overloaded:eek:

That's just not true:

COLD WATER BOOT CAMP CANADA KELOWNA DOCKSIDE - YouTube

You have a lot longer in cold water than most people think... if you are wearing floatation. People that wear floatation die of hypothermia if not rescued in time, people that aren't wearing floatation will drown before they become hypothermic if not rescued in time. Some people drown on the initial plunge into cold water when they involuntarily gasp because of the cold shock and their head is underwater.

If those were my kids, they'd be taking a 10 or 15 minute swim in that lake while wearing a PFD so they could learn first hand the effects of cold water on the human body.

You really must have a bad case of cabin fever if you can see that through 5 layers of clothes. The rest of you are turning into old curmudgeons. Like you never pulled a stunt like that when you were a kid?

The only thing I remember about pulling a stunt like that (this is completely hypothetical of course, long before my curmudgeon days began), is that all that snow clothes stuff gets flippin' heavy when it's wet. I would have just worried about someone not being able to stay above water long enough to get out.

I launch my kayak like that now and then in spring/summer (down grassy slopes). I would do it in winter if there was open water around ....LOL

Sure looked they had a lot of fun. I would have done it in my younger days as well. There were enough folks standing around incase anything happened. Not as risky as the title led to believe... JMHO!

The lack of buoyancy from wet clothing is not as bad as one imagines. Remember that as the clothing absorbs water that water is no heavier than the water you are floating in.

I have in the past during water rescue classes put on a set of the old Woolrich red and black wool hunting clothes including the pants and boots and went in the water. I have floated for over twenty minutes while the instructor was speaking without having to make any motions to tread water. After that just a little arm movements would keep me afloat. Those old suits would trap a lot of air.

I have also gone in street clothes wearing an old surplus ammo belt with 8 pounds of lead in the pockets to simulate the duty belt and equipment in a class on use and care of our Mustang PFD’s. Almost no effort to keep afloat without even inflating the PFD. Once inflated I could stay up without any help on my part.

I would recommend that everyone throw some winter clothes on this summer and take a dip. It is a good confidence builder.

Thanks dwco5051. That makes sense 'nuff. I don't own anything heavy enough to try it out anymore living down this way ;)
