I just spent 30 mins on the phone w/ progressive.......the guy finally admitted that even though I pay them 171 a year (20 ft bayliner) that if my boat sinks at the dock due to a manufacturer defect (ie. I have an I/O and I hear the bellows usually crack and boats sink) there is NO coverage for that.

Then I asked about mooring my boat out in the middle of the long island sound. He said that if I went and tied the boat to a mooring and a storm came in, swamped the boat and it sank.....it would be covered under "water damage"...he also said that if the boat was hit by lightning and it sank, I'd be covered, no matter where I am.

hmmmmm.

So I'm not really clear on how covered I am, I just know that if the bellows or ANYTHING else breaks and allows water into my boat while in the slip, I'm screwed.

Are you covered? if so, who is your company?

I use Boat U.S.

I was told that my full coverage will cover my vessel regardless of the reason. Of course, now I need to double check that for myself.

Even if a hurricane comes through (in FL...what are the chances ), I'm covered as long as I took steps to reduce the chances of damage. Removal of canvas enclosure, electronics, doubled dock lines, etc.

I asked a very similar question to Nationwide when my policy was "re-issued" recently. The policy said it would not cover damages due to maintenance neglect. I asked, if say a bellows failed, and the boat sank, would it be covered? Couldn't Nationwide say the bellows should have been replaced and hence the sinking was due to neglect? They said they would cover the boat, but not the bellows.... had to laugh at my agent on that one.

"Muskrats love to gnaw on the bellows and sink a few boats around here every year." (Nationwide agent) As a boater he stays away from docking in the rivers. LOL And yes they cover.
