Well I'm a new boat owner as of april 18th. Weather permitting (live in Minnesota) I take my new girlfriend (don't tell rebecca) out as much as I can. I am really enjoying trailering to the various lakes around here. Today decided to go to the St. Croix river with my dad. It was a beatiful cruise up and down the river...but the show I got at the launch was equally as great!

Some young kid was launching his blue metal flake bass boat in with his 4 friends standing at the dock while I was waiting patiently.

I just want to throw this in there...but if you were to ask any 1 of these kids what weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks...they would give you the wrong answer.

So his buddies have the ropes in hand to secure the boat once it's launched which was nice of them but for those of you who have used ropes before, there nice for pulling stuff but don't work too well for pushing. So here comes the bow...flying into the dock (with the ropes still in hand).

Well the wheelman's thinking...wasn't pretty (or was he) but I better get this truck and trailer out of here to avoid embarrasment. He pulls up a little bit and thinks ooh it's hung up on the trailer because I didn't back into the river far enough...so he backs in a little further, then moves forward a second time.

I decide to yell out a couple whoa's and stops while his buddies try to figure out why there hands are now bleeding. Unfortunately it wasn't soon enough and the boat bangs on the concrete landing a couple times. It's THEN that he finally realized one of his stearn straps was still connected to the boat.

He muffled a $&*! just about the time that light bulb went on in his head (while his buddies are thinking...hmm man if I had a grip on that boat like I did this rope maybe it wouldn't have slammed into the dock) and I'm thinking...pops is going to be saying something much worse

I threw my boat in reverse and got the hell away from these amateurs.

Patience is a necessity when trailering and operating a boat. Don't be in a rush when it comes to launching. Save yourself the bad day at the lake...unlike this guy who wasn't even in his boat yet.

Happy boating all and I'll see you all on the St. Croix!

Hello korygrandy,
So where is a good place to launch on the St. Croix? I have a new to me boat that I want to take out. Is there a decent place between 94 and Stillwater?

I live in White Bear Lake so I launched in Stillwater, just north of Hwy 96 MN Side. There is a launch on WI side in Hudson just north of 94 that you have to pay for $5 for WI residents and $10 for MN residents. I could imagine parking might be tough the busier it gets in both of these places...you might end up waiting for someone leaving the river before you can park your trailer.

mipple, Ii'm a former resident of Hudson, there are 2 lauches in Hudson one just by the wastewater plant and another in the park just downtown (left at lights) both are jammed on weekends. There is another place to launch in North Hudson but it is a beach launch. There is also a pay launch on the Minnesota side of the river in Lakeland just under the 94 bridge. I believe there is also a public launch in Bayport MN right next to the city beach, sorry I don't know what the fees are

But a pound of feathers IS heavier than a pound of silver...;)

What is the difference in weight between an avoirdupois ounce and a troy ounce? Does a troy pound of 12 ounces weigh the same as an avoirdupois pound of 16 ounces?

The easiest and clearest comparison is linking with the metric system.
A pound avdp. ~ 453 grams....a pound troy ~ 373 grams.
About 20% difference.

String is not weighed in troy ounces.

It is if it is silver string. Back to original topic, we always launch at the public launch north of downtown Stillwater, and always go on the weekdays so there's parking. What a cluster on the river and every lake in the area on the weekends with people. No water left to fish with all the boats, and no fish left to catch anyway. That's what pushed me out of St. Paul to Duluth. When Duluth got too crowded with twin cities fishermen, I went way north. No wait for the public launch here, ever. No offense meant to the fine folks of the twin cities metro area, but good riddence...
