Does anyone sand and/or wax their skis, kneeboards, wakeboards, etc. I sanded my kneeboard lightly just to smooth out the texture, and I liked it. So I was wordering if anyone else does it. I was thinking about doing it to my skis. Also, it seems like some wax might help also. I just fugured that the less drag there is, the less effort it takes and easier on the body it is. Light people probably think I'm nuts, but us big folks need all the help we can get. It takes a lot of work to keep 275 lb. on top of the water, for some reason my big arse wants to sink :)

the texture is there so you dont have to wax. It interrupts the surface tension so the ski doesnt want to stick to the water, much the way wax does on a smooth ski.

However, if the side of your ski are beveled instead of rounded DO NOT sand off the bevel round or you will have NO control.

Re: sanding/waxing boards and skis

It is common for offshore race boats to sand the bottom to increase speed. The theory is, air gets trapped in the rough edges left by sanding causing the hull to ride on air (less friction) instead of water. I would think, the same would apply to skis/wakeboards. I don't know to much about wakeboards, but there are skis one can buy to compensate for larger skiers. Longer ski length being one factor and width of ski being another. If your concern is with a ski, make sure you're using a ski made for your weight/skill level.
