Hi all,
I'm restoring a 1959 17 feet boat trailer and have a couple questions.

a. I want to remove the tires, but it does not have lug nuts. What I see is a cottor pin and a round housing with teeth. Do I need a tool to removing this housing?

b. I'm also sand blasting the paint and can get to bare metal. It will take me several weeks before in finish sand blasting the whole trailer. I'm debating if I should keep it out door during this process or move it in the garage. I'm not sure if rust will starts if I keep it outside.

Take you a screwdriver and tap in inbetween the raised portion of the dust cap and the wheel hub itself and you should be able to pry that thing off.
As for sandblasting yes you need it indoors when night time comes or if it rains. When you take all the paint off you remove all the protection it has so rust sets in pretty fast.

I'm familiar with the axle/hubs that you've got.......
It was Junk the day it was Built...... It's Equal to a Wheelbarrow Tire/Hub............It's a Really Unsafe system......

If you plan to use this trailer,+ go Any Faster than 20mph,.... You Should Update the Axle to a Hub,+ Wheel like Every Other Trailer on the road............

Like Bubbakat says,....... If it's Bare Steel, It'll Rust in a couple of Hours if exposed to rain, or even Dew...........
Either move it Inside, or At Least Prime what you sandblast Every time, as Soon as you're Done for the day....................

Thanks for the response.

Bondo, how difficult is it to update the old set up to a hub + wheel like you said. Is it a matter of removing the old housing and put in a new hub? Thanks.

No, It involves removing the Axle,+ Replacing the Whole Assembley.............
Might be a Good Time to Up-date the Springs Too.........

Is there a reason why you want to restore a 45 year old boat trailer? Why not buy a new (or at least newer) trailer? Remember, your boat will be riding on it.
