A couple of years ago, I was at my aunt's place in Massey's Landing, on the Indian River / Rehoboth Bay, in Delaware. My dad and I decided to take my aunt's boat to the inlet to pick up my cousin from work. We head out, and he decided to take the narrow unmarked channel by one of the islands to save 5 minutes. Well, that did not go so well.

We are in a carolina skiff, 17 foot with a Yamaha 60hp 4 stroke. I was sitting in the seat on the front of the console holding the spotlight, when all of a sudden, I am kissing the bow. I didn't drop the light or my beer, but I banged my shins real good.

My dad throws it in reverse. Nothing but a lot of noise and vibration. He tries everything he can do to power it off. Nothing is working. The whole time I am yelling at him to kill the engine, and being the seasoned boater, he ignores me.

I kill the engine, and show him what I was just looking at over the bow. It was shallow enough to step out and not get our shoes wet. I hit the trim and got the motor out of the water. Pushed off the sand bar back in to the channel. Off we went, and took the marked channel back to the house.

I love the Carolina Skiffs for shallow water. They will float with the motor up in about 3 inches of water. But need a little more when on plane.

Not a thread hijack but fits with your story....

Once in Hilton Head myself and 2 other skis went out (didn't check tide chart...WHY....a pwc doesn't take sh1t to draft, right). Coming back in (shallow inlet) we passed (dodged) 6 grounded boats. Then it happened....The skis started sucking mud and bumping bottom. Long story short, we walked the skis about 1/4 mile in the inlet and were VERY thankful for 4x4 tow vehicles, and that 2 people can lift a pwc nose onto a trailer and for strong winch straps).

over on the Eastern Shore, if you have paint on your skeg, you haven't been boating!

Ha! I grew up in Beaufort, SC. The boat I have today is the same one my dad and fished out of when I was in college. My dad gave me the boat when I was in Texas. People at the boat ramp there would would comment on the lack of paint on my skeg.

If your PWC is WOT in less than 2 feet of water, your'e sucking sand & rocks through the impeller and pump. A pump rebuild can cost over $1,000. Just 'cause they do it in the movies, don't mean it's O.K. (an impeller with just a few nicks can reduce thrust by 50 percent)

In nc you would be seeing the bars for that but not in the sand. Dont they have open containers laws on moving boats where you live?

Not in NJ on the salt. The operator simply needs to be below the legal limit of .08. Passengers can drink whatever they want.

In Delaware, passengers can have an open container. Boats and Cars.
