Alright,
I don't expect you to give up your secret honeyhole spots. But, my buddy is about to buy a 21ft North River SeaHawk. I told the wife I was gonna buy one before we go back up to AK, whenever that is, sigh. :'(
Anyway, we will be trying our hand at halibut and salmon fishing in the bay area.

What kind of tips do you all have?
I have fished for salmon in rivers, and halibut from charter boats. However, I have never gone out on my own looking for them in the ocean. What kind of bottom terrain should we look for? Are there any dead giveaways?

Re: san francisco bay area fishing

To start with Halibut and Salmon are summer time fishing.
Halibut fishing you want a sandy bottom and best fishing in is in the spring and early summer. Web site listed very good. Fishing inside San Francisco Bay good from Berkley all the way down to the south bay.
Offshore outside the golden gate beaches to the south very good. Be Carefull there as with strong outgoing currents and incoming wind and sea can get very dangerous real fast.

Salmon of course must wait for the season to open. I hate trolling for Salmon so wait until the mouching get good before go. We Fish in water 40 to 200 feet but really look for bait to pick out spot. If we see no bait then we go spots where we know people caught fish the days before but expect lots of other to do the same.

Winter boat shows at the Cow Palace and San Mateo Fair grounds will have lot of Party boat capitains and guides giving semmarrs. International Sportmans show always has lot of speakers. They give out good information. Shows are Jan and Feb so coming up soon.
