Re: salt lake

I spent a few years in Utah. Are you going to be in Salt Lake itself? How long will you be there?

Salt Lake doesn't have anything close, but you can be to some great streams and lakes in a matter of an hour or two. The closest I can think of are Jordanell (I watched this one get built...just finished about 10 years ago) and Deer Creek. Driving from Salt Lake you need to head east through Parley's canyon towards Park City. Keep heading up I80 until you get to the Heber exit (past the Park City exit). Take this heading south and you will eventually come to Jordanell...about 10 miles from the turn off of I80 (guessing).

To get to Deer Creek, keep going past Jordanell into Heber City. Go through town until you get to the south end and you will see signs for Provo. Turn right and follow this road to Deer Creek res., if you are into fly fishing, go over the damn and fish along the river below the damn. GREAT fly fishing down there!!

Another great lake to go out to is Strawberry. Instead of turning right to head to Provo from Heber, stay on the main road that curves east through the canyon. When you get to the top of the canyon and start back down the other side you will come to one of the largest lakes in the Northen part of Utah (Flaming Gorge is the largest, and too far from Salt Lake). Strawberry is fantastic for trout, but you may need a boat to hit any really good spots.

We used to fish off shore using Crappie rigs. We would hook a good size weight on the end of it, a 6 or 4 size hook with a night crawler and a small (mini) marshmallow. Worked like a charm. The line sinks to the bottom and the Marshmallow helps the worm float. We just keept the line tight to get a good read on strikes.

I could go on and on about fishing there...that's where I caught my first fish. Its a great area for camping, hunting, fishing, etc. Now I am in Indiana, and I don't have a CLUE how to fish for Bluegill, Bass, or Crappie's. I have to learn how to fish all over again!

Re: salt lake

Can't say as I ever heard of anyone catching bass in Utah. Lived there for 20 years...but, then again, we always went for the trout...could have been bass, we just never tried for any.

Re: salt lake

Wasn't there a million dollar bass at Lake Powell a couple of years ago? I think they marked a certain bass at the lake and if you caught it then you would win a million dollars.

Re: salt lake

Could have been. But Lake Powell is nowhere near SLC. It's a good 8-10 hrs from SLC.
