A group of us are going salmon fishing with a guide on lake michigan near kewaunee, wi. I was wondering what anyone would consider a "wall hanger." Keep in mind that this is my first time going and I probably wont go again in the near future. I just really have no idea how big these fish get. My buddy said the biggest one they got last time they went was 28 pounds is this big?

Re: salmon fishing

I have a 26# mounted from 1995. The guide crinkled his nose a bit when I said I wanted it to mount, but it was my first time fishing for them, and I haven't been out again for em since. It looks very nice with my 11# Walleye, 9# LM, and 5# SM... just waiting to get my 3#6oz Black Crappie back from the taxidermist... THAT is my proudest catch, to date! :D

wiguy,

26# is not a bad fish, considering its an Atlantic Salmon?

You should try to make it out here in Washington State to try some Lunker KINGS! A 57 pounder was caught on a charter recently out in Westport, Washington.
Link: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/fishing/

Anyways.. good luck out there fishing.
:D
sirjin

The 38 pound Chinook the wife caught last year ended up in the smoker.

She lost another one simular two weekends ago. A hook straightened out next to the boat. Shoulda heard the baby girl whine......It would've been smoked too.

my parents were in the lake huron area couple weeks ago, a friend of theirs was in a 3 day salmon tourny. the biggest salmon caught in the three days was 28lbs. so yea i would say a 28lb'er would be worthy of a mount! good luck :)

If your going to have your fish mounted.
If its a skin mount you are after, ask the
taxidermist to skin out your fish for you right
away so you can save the meat for canning or
cooking. Most dont like to do this as they keep
the meat usually for themselves, but it is your
fish so it doesn't hurt to ask.

I fish the MI side of the lake. A 28lb is a nice fish, larger than average anyway. The kings are just starting to come in and make their run. When are you going? Another couple weeks should be prime time on this side.
