Hey yall,

My parents have a 44' sailboat that I would like to fish off of while I am out sailing. I need suggestions on rigs, technique, and location.

The boat is in the Ft. Lauderdale area.

Many suggestions can be made. Artificial, live, or dead baits. I would go with artificial or dead bait. Troll a balyhoo with a skirt for a dolphin fish or sailfish. Maybe a tuna or two. Couple rods in a rod holder and sail her offshore a mile or 3. Around 6kts...lines out between 100' to 150'...skipping the bait across the top of the surf. Best to troll with the wind and surf as preditors will be hanging around with their mouth open waiting for food to come their way.

I think I caught more fish when I first started than I do now. Something to be said about "beginners luck"...and that's what gets us hooked on fishin'.

Gook Luck! :)

There is an awning over the back of the boat. Not sure a rod is useable.

Oh..don't know then. Here in FL you will usually need a rod, unless you are good at handlining. Is that what you are looking for?

Get 2 surf rods, get two rail mount rod holders (one for each side of the boat). Essentially you are trying to copy a sportfisher w/ outriggers. I'm sure you have seen what a sportfisher w/outriggers looks like , right?? Then you can troll and not have the awning in the way. Skirted Ballyhoo work well, but you might lose a lot of bait and ballyhoo are expensive. Diving plugs (Rapala stretch 30's) are popular but expensive too. Use a short piece of wire leader if kings or wahoo are around, or else you will lose everything you throw back there.

Another option is anchoring over a reef and dropping cut bait down to the snapper and grouper.

Real fishermen will find a way to make it work, we are addicted, we love to catch fish.

I built a stabillizer for my canoe years ago so I could stand-up while fishing the shallow and narrow rivers here in N Florida. Being able to stand-up makes casting, lure presentation, setting the hook, and landing the fish much easier.

I use an ice fishing rod and reel on the sailboat. It's a very short rod and the reel is small.Good for fish up to 10 lbs.Got it at Wally world but probably not available in southern states.
