Hi All!

I just purchased a new to me sailboat that came with a Sail Master 8. Before I try to start the motor, I wanted to make sure everything looks good. I wanted to get the owner's manual to see what it recommends. I am not particularly handy, but I can generally follow directions. I don't know the year of the motor. The Mod# is J85RLCDE and the Ser# is B0100829. If anyone can tell me what year it is, I would appreciate it! Any helpful hints to do before pulling the cord would also be very welcomed!

Also, the motor has some electrical lines, I am assuming those are to charge the batteries. Do they need to be attached to a battery before I start the motor?

Thanks!
Kevin

Should be a J8SRLCDE - '86 model.

If you don't know how old the water pump impeller is, that should be changed as a precaution. Aside from that, not a lot to worry about besides a clean carb and maybe a couple of new spark plugs depending on how the originals look . Gap is 30 thousandths.

As advised a new water pump impeller would be wise.

If you have any waterflow or cooling problems that are not solved by a new impeller suspect the grommet at the top of the water tube.

The correct fuel mix is 50:1 even if there are still decals on the motor that say 100:1 or if the manual says 100:1

Also change the gearcase oil, or at least check it for signs of water intrusion.

The recommended spark plugs are Champion QL77JC4 .. NGK BZ7HS-10 should be suitable if you cannot get the Champions but do not use resistor plugs such as NGK BR7HS-10 which are sometimes listed as equivalent ... They are not!

The Sailmaster ( and the Evinrude Yachtwin ) engines have a stator coil and rectifier fitted for battery charging as standard equipment.
If you don't connect to a battery insulate the terminals at the end of cable or disconnect it if you don't intend to use the battery charging

The amount of charging you get is pretty small unless you run the engine for quite long periods at fairly high revs .... neither of which you normally do with a sailboat. I fitted a small solar panel to supplement the output from the engine

Your outboard bracket looks pretty similar to mine ...... The springs in mine are now so weak that it is difficult to lift the engine, I am thinking about buying a new bracket.

Your prop does not look original. It would have been 9?" x 6?" with big highthrust "Mickey Mouse ear" blades ... but they are NLA

TIP: If / when you change the pump impeller. remove the gearcase c/w 5" extension, clean the drive shaft then remove the extension. Fit the extension to the leg then refit the gearcase when reassembling

You're right. I thought the "S" was a five. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I will need to check on the items you mentioned in the "TIP" once I get an owner's manual. A lot of what you wrote is Greek to me. =(

But I plan to learn! =)
