So I purchased an 85' 30hp rope start tiller short shaft today for $250. Now I bought this as just a parts motor for my 88' since the power head and lower unit are interchangeable with mine. Not that I even needed it but hey you can never have enough extra parts. So the guy tells me he has never run it because he needed a long shaft for his boat and didn't realize this was a short shaft. So I take it home and she fires up on first pull : ) Then I compression check it and she has 112 psi in the top cylinder and 110 in the bottom! Score! The motor sounds and runs so well that now I don't want to use it for parts. But I noticed there seems to be no safety kill switch on this motor, no key or nothing. Did they come like this in 85' with no safety lanyard or key?

Almost positive it doesn't. Don't see any place for it anyways by the pictures.

You may just replace the stop button in the front panel with a lanyard safety switch if you want.

Yeah I am going to have to do something if I plan on running it. I have my children in the boat with me 95% of the time. Its one thing if I fall out and run myself over alone but I don't want the kids to see that, or have them be thrown out also after I go overboard. So I will have to come up with a safety kill somehow.

Wife is not happy with me..... Got 4 motors now and just 1 boat. So I figure I need another boat now to get my ratio down ;) The wife didn't like this idea......:D

Johny, great find !
I couldn't pass for that price either.
Looks very nice. That tiller grip looks hardly used.

yeah other than a little surface dirt and grime it looks like it has very limited hours on it for an 85' Looks like it has a lot less hours on it than my 88'

You can add a safty kill sw to the motor by drilling another hole for one in a covenet location and wireing it to the same wires that are on the standard kill switch. This way you can use the one on the front panel to kill the motor and the saftey for just that. Otherwise you might need to buy several clips as extras as the plastic ones wont last long with constent use.

Hey JB, I am extremely interested in how you complete this task. I am in the exact same situation...

I just grabbed an 83 Johnson 25 HP, same configuration as you have there. I also have young fishermen in the boat and don't want them to have to run to Canada before the boat stops if I actually fall out.

Please post up how ya make it happen man:)

That sure looks like it will work :) Nice find, I may have to order me one of those. I haven't gotten to do any looking around for a switch yet but that does look like what we need.

It looks like it will fit right in the current stop switch hole and it will just replace it. That way the key has to be in to start it also I believe.

Re: Safety kill switch on 1985 30hp Johnson?

Maybe you guys can help me...
I have an 84 Johnson 35hp electric start/tiller that cranks fine, seems to be getting gas but won't fire. Thinking that something is bad with the pushbutton kill-switch. If I test it with a multimeter should the circuit be broken when putton is not pushed, or should circuit be complete when the button is not pushed? Should I take the wires off the switch to test it so I am not getting a complete circuit the other way through the engine and fooling myself?
Thanks for any advice!

There kill button shorts out the ingnition when pushed and should be open when the button is not pushed on the tiller. The safty kill switch works the same when used.
