Safety concern

I recently purchased a 1979 Halman Nordic sailboat as a project boat. The boat has a 9.9 Johnson outboard on it that is electric start. Currently, both the battery (for starting the outboard and for lights, etc.) is located in an aft lazerette, next to the fuel tank for the outboard. This is a good place for each of them, as the compartment is sealed from the rest of the boat and fumes from the battery and from the fuel tank can vent to the outside. I'm not sure, however, that it's a good place for BOTH of them, for fear of sparks igniting fuel fumes.

Is there a safety concern with having the battery and the fuel tank in the same compartment, or is this common practice?

Thanks.

Re: Safety concern

no it is not! your gas tank can stay were it is but move both of the batterys to the center of the boat for ballast.

also look for gel batterys those do not vent gases.

Re: Safety concern

I agree with Sloopy... batteries centered on the keel for ballast. One more point, I would put them in secured battery boxes... Walmart has acid resistant boxes for less than $10 a piece.
