safer way of grounding plugs?

What is the best/safe way of testing for plug sparks? Can any one part of powerhead be touched and what other safety precautions need be followed?

I took a piece of 12 gauge wire and stripped the plastic off it. It then turned into a long piece of copper wire. I wrapped it around all the spark plugs and grounded it to somplace on the block.
