Fresh off the presses....<br /><br />"Cardinal Renato Martino (of the Vatican), head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said he felt compassion for Saddam and that the world should have been spared the images of his medical examination after his capture.<br /><br />"I feel pity at seeing this destroyed man, treated like a cow having his teeth checked," Martino said. "I have seen this man in his tragedy ... and I had a sense of compassion." "<br /><br />Maybe he's never been to a dentist/doctor himself? Lots of humans get their teeth checked too. And actually, even coming from a farming background, I've never seen a cow have its teeth checked at all. <br /><br />Anyway, the main point....maybe it's about time the Vatican put it's big hat on straight and felt a little "compassion" for the people that have been molested by countless priests in this country and around the world. Or maybe they could at least acknowledge the fact? What a joke....any thoughts? Keep em nice for Big Brother

That plus the sexual abuse scandal in Boston is enough to make me seriously consider leaving the church. No joke. I've about had it. I sent the Pope a letter discussing how difficult they are making it for people to remain American Catholics.

I wonder if the cardinal would be as compassionate if he had family living or dying in Iraq?????I dont think so.Some public figures should stand in the mirror and say what they have to first so they can see what morons they look like saying it.Charlie

Ralph, that's what I really can't understand...I'm assuming that the higher-ups don't realize that they could lose many people from their silence/lack of compasion and it's not, for your sake, that they just don't care. I might not be a church-going person myself, but I do respect the morals and conviction of those who are and I think it's a shame that (from an outside viewpoint anyway) your church seems like it's becoming nothing but a large, scandalous corporation headed by people out for nothing but personal gain. The faith of people is being broken and it is a sad thing.

Well said and very true. The Church has lost its way. If the next pope does not find it very quickly they can kiss off a big chunck of American Catholics.

The way i see it is Saddam is lucky to be treated like a cow,and not like the vermin that he actually is.<br />He is lucky to be captured by American soldiers and not by the Iraqis in the street,they would've probably torn the ******* limb by limb.
