Fallen Marine Makes Final Trip Home
HOYLETON -- A fallen Marine from Southern Illinois made his final trip home Thursday.
The body of Staff Sergeant Jordan Emrick arrived at the MidAmerica airport near St. Louis Thursday afternoon. A Marine honor guard escorted his casket on its return to Illinois.
The 26-year-old was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan last Friday while serving his third deployment. Emrick joined the Marines shortly after graduating from Nashville High School in 2002.
People in the Washington County community came out in force to honor Emrick and his family for his sacrifice on Thursday. Hundreds filled the sidewalks in Nashville carrying flags and signs; more lined the processional route up Highways 127 and 177 all the way into Hoyleton.
Around 150 members of the Patriot Guard Riders were on hand for the processional. Members were moved by the show of support from the community.
"I don't think any of these riders, veterans, or non-veterans, young or old, don't have a tear in their eye to see these patriotic people that are out," said Ride Captain Bruce Tota.
Several area fire departments also took part in the tribute. Jordan's brother, Brandon Emrick, is an assistant fire chief in Hoyleton.
But even those that didn't know Jordan personally came to pay their respects.
"He was willing to fight for all the people he didn't know, not just the ones he knew," said Avery Meade.
The community will have a chance to say its final goodbye to Jordan Emrick this weekend. Visitation will be held Friday beginning at 4 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton. The church will hold funeral services on Saturday at 11 Am.
