Okay Iboaters.... i'm from new england... and i do consider myself fairly liberal. But i also consider myself having common sense. Which leads me to my question.... and later a link to the story.
What are you views on firearms?
Is it a right to own? or a priveledge?
Where do you folks draw the line?

My own views...... are that....
It is a half right and half priveledge to own and carry firearms, and by that I mean semi automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns. I do draw the line at full auto, as I do not see a reason for the "AVERAGE JOE" to need full auto anything.
When I was 13-14 I was taught firearm safety and marksmanship in the boyscouts. We started with air rifles and moved to .22's and .410 shotguns. This included class time and range time.
When I was 15 I took the Massachusettes hunter saftey course, which was another course in saftey and hunting rules. This got me my FID card or basically rifle permit, at 15 in massachusettes. This class was only class time, no range time.
When I was 25 I took a Massachsuettes certified NRA semi-sponsored pistol/concealed carry course. This got me my "Class "A" license to carry concealed large capacity firearms" in Massachusettes. In a nutshell a pistol permit.

Now getting back to my views.... I believe that......

1. If you are a convicted felon... then you have no business carrying firearms for quite some time after your conviction..... but if it's years and years later... then individually felons can petition the courts if they feel the need to have a permit. (for example you screwed up in your 20's but now your 50 and legit and have a legit reason for having one)

2. If you, at the age of 15, and have commited no felonies.... If you take and pass a hunter safety course (with class time and range time) you should be permited to have a license for single shot/pump/bolt rifles and shotguns for the purpose of hunting only. This would be a license that would allow the young hunter to be in the woods with such firearm during hunting seasons. However, The individual would not be allowed to purchase firearms or ammunition. The purchaser would have to have a parent or legal gardian that takes the same hunter course with the kid, and that gardian is to be held semi liable for the actions of the kid. It splits the responsibility of firearm safety. And if the parent doesn't think the kid should hunt then the parent doesn't sign off on it.... and no permits issued.

3. If at the age of 18, and if you have commited no felonies. You should be allowed to take a state run pistol course for all firearms except for full auto's. And by this I mean a real course.... not a few hours on a sunday and you get a permit on monday. Maybe something a month long..... in which its 4 to 5 hours a class. and 4 to 5 classes. My massacusettes class was this long. If you can pass all the written exams, show firearm safety and proficiency on a range, and the class instructor has no objections because of odd behavior..... then it is the right of the citizen to be permitted to carry/own firearms. But I also believe that the police/permitting agency to have the right to be able to perform a drug test at the time of licensing, and also have the right to perform random drug testing every year or so.... and to pull the license of anybody who fails it. And by drug testing I don't care about a little dope.... I care about the person with serious narcotics in their system carrying guns.

That are my views in a nutshell.... I believe them to be pretty fair... and not unreasonable.

Which leads me to the story and the link to it.......

http://wbztv.com/local/boy.shot.with.2.849254.html

Dad brings 8 year old kid to a full auto gun show..... on some kind of range.
Dad gives the 8 year old and uzi.... and the kid fires it.... and the full auto recoil bumps the muzzle up and the kid shoots himself in the head. Kid dies a day or 2 later.

Now i'm all about being a smart/responsible/educated firearm owner....... and on top of that common sensed.

But Seriously...... WHAT THE HELL???????????????????????????? Who gives an 8 year old an UZI??????? I don't care how liberal or conservative you are..... most of you folks have common sense. I'm sure firing an UZI is a thrill..... And i'm sure flying an F-15 is a thrill as well....... But they don't let everyone fly F-15's..... and for good reasons.

Sad story..... Ignorant arse of a parent....... Anyone have thoughts?

EDIT: Unacceptably hostile, Chris. It is our Constitution, not the NRA, that guarantees our rights.

My thought is... I feel somewhat sorry for the kid... and not at all sorry for the dad who rightfully should feel aweful for the rest of his life.

I only feel somewhat sorry for the kid because with parenting like that, I have to wonder if he wouldn't have turned out ot be a school shooter anyway.

PS - and YES, I absolutely do plan to teach my son to shoot, but he'll be starting with a pellet gun, and working his way up to a .22 as he proves his ability to handle it properly.

capt......

im from canada....and we dont carry guns up here.....

BUT....as far as your opinions of who should and why.and education......i see no flaws, except....the part where the instructor "because of odd behaviour" can nullify......thats a can of worms.....but out side that ....

i cannot comment out side of that. but i think your ideas are sound

It's my personal belief that schools should hold a non-biased safety course for all students. It should be required for all students. A lot of the accidental shootings are just that. There are a lot more people hurt, wounded, and or killed because they have no knowledge of firearms safety. Sure some parents may object to it for there own personal reasons. Maybe they don't or won't have firearms in there house. But that don't mean they won't encounter them at Jim's, John's, or Joan's house. With a knowledge of firearms and safety it could prevent another accident. You know you just can't protect anyone from being stupid.

i feel there should be atleast miminum requirements for range shooting also.

Disney even sets rules as to their ride "if you are not this tall, you cannot ride this ride"

i hold the range operator as responsible as the parent.

In England (Great Britain) where private ownership of firearms are strictly regulated, there has been an explosion of firearm and knife related deaths in the recent years by the under 18 group.

Germany's laws for private, heavily regulated ownership of firearms gets worse every year. This has only lead to fewer and fewer, officially registered, hunters and sport marksmen. At the same time the gun related deaths continue to rise. They are bought and sold illegally by people having no training. The wrong people are being painted as criminals here. They are not the problem, but they are easy public targets by the “anti-everything-I-don't-like-activist”.

It is not a problem of needing to outlaw firearms, it is a problem of illegal firearms, the use of firearms by the non-trained, outlaw individuals, and idiots alike.

You can't regulate intelligence, and everything you forbid to be sold over the counter, just gets sold under it here. Want a illegal gun in Germany? Got about and hour and a half?

In the case above, I think the father should be charged with manslaughter.
