Looking to change the anodes on my outdrive this spring.

It is a '95 Mercruiser alpha 1, (think it's a gen 1). The anodes are magnesium (boating in fresh water).

I've been looking at the anodes for a while, looks pretty straight forward (unscrew a couple of screws, take old ones off, put new ones on).

My questions are: Is this true? Does the skeg on the rear of the unit simply twist a little and to remove from the unit? Is a package of five anodes expensive ? (Canadian dollars)

Thanks in advance for the help...been enjoying reading other advice you guys offer.

Re: sacrificial anodes

that should be the GenII the alpha 1 unit did not have them. not having a parts manual here I just bought the 8887656q01 kit for one here in the salt pond. it cost 73 dollars for the kit and contained all the gaskets, fasteners and continuity washers. but that was for the aluminium saltwater version. the freshwater version may be a different part number.

Re: sacrificial anodes

You have a Alpha I Gen II drive. The Gen II started in 91 and everything after that has been the Gen 11 style.

The trimtab anode has a bolt down through a hole in the housing. Best thing to do is get a manual for your engine and drive. ALL the preventative maintenance items are listed, and there are a lot of them.
Below is a link to a 2000 owners manual, it will explain a lot of your questions.

Owners Manual
