What's involved in changing the starter on a 1996 S10 Blazer, 4x4 ?
I've been told its more than simple.
Want to know what I'm getting into before I start.

Thanks.

Its stupid easy!

Disconnect negative cable from battery(this is important.)

Remove two bolts mounting starter.

Remove small cable from solenoid on starter,

Remove large cable from starter(if you didn't disconnect battery cable if this wire touches anything it will short out, spark get hot and may cause fire. )

Re install in opposite order.

Total job usally doesn't require the truck to be jacked up, and can be completed in a parking lot in under 20 minutes. Yes I have done it in a parking lot before.

Plus, The starter can only go in one way so there's no chance of installing it upside down! It is very EZ....

Ok, that all sounds well and good, have changed half dozen starters on other vehicles.

But a guy at work said he could not get his out.
That it was wedged between the engine and the a-frame, and no way could he get it out. He gave up and took it to a garage.

Upon looking at it, it is in a tight spot, and I was wondering if it was indeed as difficult as he said.

OK, I guess I will go get a starter and have a go at it.

I have seen some starters that "seem" to wedge them selves.
Many time after the wires are removed and bolts taken out. You may need to pull back and try to push the back end of the start up to kinda point the nose of the starter down and wiggle it out..

I had a 1985 S-15 4X4 and had to unbolt the exhaust pipe from the manifold to get the starter out.

Re: s10 blazer - changing starter ?

I have just done this on my new to me 4x4 4 door 98 blazer and I can tell you I faught that bastage fpor all it was worth . I finally figured out a little trick . Theres a plate behind my starter that bolts to the block but goes over the opening in the tranny where the starter goes . I slid the starter forward and removed this plate and the dang thing almost fell out . I couldnt believe this little 1/32" plate ( maybe that thick ) was holding it up the whole time but it was with it out of the way it went in like buttah :D. I did of course replace the plate before bolting in the new starter and yeah theres almost enough room in there for a starter.

Yeah, Rick, see the plate, guess its just there to keep stones out of the flywheel.

Chilton manual says to remove motor mount, loosen trans mount, then jack up motor an inch. !!!

Still not sure if I want to do this one.
Can't seem to figure a how to disconnect the cables. They look too short to reach out of "the hole". And my hands don't fit in the hole.

Thanks for the tip.

LOL ROscoe I understand the hand thing mine dont fit real easy either but its really not that bad and unbolting all the mounts isnt needed might make it easier but not needed.

Re: s10 blazer - changing starter ?

Well, that was lots of fun, but done.

Took wat too long, and 2 extra trips to the hardware store.
One for a 5mm nut, which should have come on the starter for the solenoid wire, and one trip for some nice heavy wire, to replace the broken wire in the harness.

Not fun doing this in a gravel driveway, minimal ground clearance, and of course it started to rain half way through.

But it is done.
Was made easier because the replacement starter was actually 1/4" smaller in diameter, and an inch shorter.

See it was fun but ya did it :D . I would agree a gravel driveway in the rain isnt the perfect area to do it :D.
