RUT ROHHHH !! 135ESL73M new impeller . . . and I got STEAM on restart ??

Well my Johnny was due for an impeller. The old one was shot, as you can see in the pic I took after switching it out.

The new one seemed to go in fine. It seemed a bit tight (turning the driveshaft by hand), but I figured that was normal.

Refilled the LU, fired her up. No hot water return at first, but after warm-up it began to discharge . . . it felt a bit hotter than 145F. Also small bits of black rubber ejected, and the LU casing began to get hot . . . what I thought was way too hot. Looked like steam also. I quickly shut it down.

Can I pull the LU again without draining the brand new fill of 90W? Also, the two leads from the temp switch in the block are unhooked from the terminal, and I don't know where they are supposed to go. Not sure what to do next. I AM sure that I'm not starting her up again until I sort this out.

Any suggestions ??

Yes, you can drop the lower unit without draining the oil.
The sensor on top of the engine is not the sensor foe the temp horn, it is in the cylinder head with a tan wire on it. I don't have a manual for your engine, so I can't help you with the thermo switch leads. I am sure someone will come along and help you out, give it some time.

OK Daviet, thank you for your response.

I do have the manual for the 135ESL73M, but I'm having a heck of a time with the wiring diagram. The sensor I'm talking about has two wires coming out of a round plug in the top of the block, near the hook. I thought it was the auto-choke that kicks off when the motor warms up. I'm kinda uneasy having the leads disconnected if I am having a problem thats causing high temps. However, it did not seem that the powerhead got hot, the heat was coming from the water pump area.

Guess I should pull the LU again and have a look . . . anyone else ever seen this after changing an impeller ?

there is no way youl be getting steam from the lower unit.
its probably exhaust leaking due to not putting back the rubber gasket correctly !!!!!
if your getting bits of black rubber coming out the exhaust holes at the top then that could be old bits of impellor but looking at your
pic of the old one it looks like its all there ?????

now what exactly do you mean by lower unit getting hot ? are you talking about the gearbox or the mid section ?

taking the gearbox off has nothing to do with emptying oil from anywhere so yes just drop it if you think something is wrong.

when you also talk of water discharge, I take it that you mean from the top 2 exhaust relif holes and not from the thru prop exhaust.
as these engines do not have a tell tale fitted it must be from the top 2 holes, this would be hotter as it only comes out when the thermostat opens and exits with exhaust as well, so the exhaust heat will make water seem hot.

you need to get either a temp guage and sender or a infer red heat gun to get realy accurate temp from the heads.

if you can hold your hand on it for 8 to 10 seconds its fine (don't scream if its hot just take hand off and look tough ha ha ).

the sensor on top of the engine is called a thermo switch, temp , so must be for auto choke or temp guage , but not 100% on this.

Re: RUT ROHHHH !! 135ESL73M new impeller . . . and I got STEAM on restart ??

Thank you for your response, phill. It seemed like the external casing was getting abnormally hot right where the LU bolts to the upper . . . right where the water pump is. The old impeller was intact (barely) when I removed it, and I scrubbed all the old black residue off the inside of the pump housing before I put the new one in. So the black stuff is coming from the new one . . . maybe it will wear down a bit since it's new and very stiff ?

There was no water coming from the exhaust relief vents. I cleaned the exhaust gasket and reconditioned it with permatex while I had the LU off. Water was going in the water intake vents and coming out the water discharge vents. It should be discharging at 145F, and as I said, it felt a little too hot. The motor seemed to stress a bit after it warmed up and didn't want to stay running.

I dunno. If anyone else has any thoughts on this, I'd appreciate them. I'm gonna pull the LU again, take a look and take some pics and see what happened. I will post some pics up later.

what are the water discharge vents you talk of ?

the water should escape from the through prop and the exhaust holes at the top when the thermostat opens.
if water is coming out of the two top holes all the time then thermostats or pressure reliefs are bad and need replacing.

the impeller is a tight sort of fit and should no way wear at all to fit or wear itself in etc.

when you do check it again, use a bit of dishwashing soap to lubricate it in the housing and it will also make it easier to get pump body back on.

and no the water does not discharge at 145f, that is the temp the thermostat starts to open, the engine could be a good few degrees hotter.
my thermostat opens at 143, but water is not that hot at all, even though the engine is over the 143 temp !!!!.

is this on water muffs or in a water butt or ?

by the way if there was black rubber in the water pump housing stuck on then this engine has been started up without water over the gearbox or muffs etc.
the engine should NEVER be started without water or the impeller can be shot inside 10 seconds !!!!! FACT.

and that is the cleanest gearbox ive ever seen on a 135hp, it looks brand new condition.

Black residue?? Not good. It's time to change the stainless steel cup. I would get a whole kit on hand and be prepared to change the whole thing if it gets too hot.
