Rusty trailer...can I paint over the rust?

I have an old rusty trailer for my 16' CV-16. I plan on selling the boat, so I want to repaint the trailer to make it look nicer. I plan on stripping off all the old paint that is flaking off, but there will still be some rust. Are there any products that will work to paint over the rust?

Rustiloum makes one but you will have to wire brush it and use their primer or it won't last till the water gets hot You can buy it at lowes or they cary valspar which is just as good

If you want to do it right (right cost MORE than rustolum) go for POR 15. Good stuff. Costly (compared to others) but better than others (IMHO).

Buy Eastwood's Corroless paint-over-rust product. Far superior to POR-15, which has failed me more times than I care to remember.<br /><br />www.eastwoodco.com

If you really wated to do it right ,which you may not since you're going to sell it,I'd have it sandblasted and then prime and paint.

Yeah, I was planning on completely stripping it and sanding it and then coating it in truck bed liner. Now I just want it to look a little better so I can get rid of it.

I am in the process of doing the same thing. I am scraping and wire brushing the rust and using a product from lock-tite called extend. It turns the rust black. Then I am priming and painting with rustoleom.<br /><br />Mike

your could alternatively sandblast/grind the rust off, and then have it hot dipped of course...

I used a 4" grinder with a wire brush. Took oof everything I could. Painted 3 coats of Rustoleums rusty metal primer. Then 3 -4 coats of their premium gloss black paint. Looks like a new trailer. So far so good<br /><br />Man I am glad I didn't buy the POR-15!
