I picked up some of this primer paint at Home depot the other day...2 spray cans. does anyone know if this paint is any good?

there is precious little info about how to use it and how it can be top coated.....

I know i want to be able to go right into painting the top coat soon after... i really dont want to sand the whole boat again to get the top coat to stick to my primer..... BUT i dont want to spend $300 to paint this boat..... and I know some paints can be almost $200 per gallon.

I have an air compressor and a few older Binks guns....but was thinking just to buy a new cheapo lowe pressure high volume spray gun just for this project....and spary the whole boat....

kinda just looking for guidance on all my options....I might have jumped the gun buying the rustoleum rattle can primer...

it didnt say anything about self etching, and it didnt say i had to sand after.....

as usuall paint stick like crazy to stuff you didnt want painted and peel on stuff you want it to stick good too!!

Ill slow down..if need be here...because taking this boat to bare aluminum cost me over $100 in supplies and at least 10 hours so far.

Hey Bob, Rustoleum makes a Self etching primer in spray bombs, you will need to use that first on any bare aluminum spots. I then use the product you bought, in a spray gun thinned with acetone. Then the top coat of Rustoleum Pro with acetone and Valspar hardner.

Bob, I used rustoleum aluminum primer with the white cap. I also used their professional series paint as a top coat. I didn't sand between coats (1 primer, 2 top coats) and I couldn't be happier with the results. I thinned the top coat with about 10% acetone. The best part was, with all the materials it was less then $60!

how old is the paint job now?

I painted my aluminum alumacraft 18 years ago....I used imron automotive enamel, with a hardener.. i cant remember the primer..and that paint is still tight...but that paint was bucco expensive , back then..... this is going to be my back up boat.....and Ill probably move it on when i get time to do a 21 or 22 footer in the future....but i dont want a peeling paint job...even for any future owner...

I am thinking two cans of spray primer wont be enough for the outer hull!!

what kind of sprayer did you use?? or did you brush it on??

I think i wasnt a glossy top coat...... I want the boat to look like water.

thanks

Re: rustoleum high performance aluminum primer ?

The paint isn't more then a few weeks old, however I have used their professional products on other projects in the past with long pasting results. You have to under stand that rustoleum wasn't designed for marine use, so the longevity of the product can't be guaranteed. However if the directions are followedit will last some time. The deciding factor for me was it can also be purchased in the spray cans as well. So future touch ups or repairs are fairly easy. As for the spray gun, I had a cheapo harbor freight low volume low pressure unit. If i remember correctly it only required about 20# of air and something like 4 cfm. Hope this helps

Re: rustoleum high performance aluminum primer ?

Bob, I just painted my ss in the past two weeks. I used the rustoleum aluminum primer. Make sure to get the can with the larger white sprayer (lots easier on the fingers) I used six cans total, putting on three coats. I then topcoated with Rusto professional thinned with 15% acetone, in a harbor freight high volume/low pressure sprayer at about 50 psi. I am very happy with the results so far, well just have to wait and see about longevity. I have pics posted on my thread if you want to look. Hope this helps.

Re: rustoleum high performance aluminum primer ?

would you have to sand after the base coat, before the etching primer was put on?????

I dont have to use this 2 cans of aluminum primer just because I have it.... I dont want to give myself a head ache and added expenses just to be able to use what i already have in hand...especially since it isnt a $100 worth of paint!

I don't understand this sentence.

The etching primer is step one. I wouldn't sand it. I would sand after the regular primer.

Re: rustoleum high performance aluminum primer ?

correct. you don't sand after etching primer. and for best adhesion of primaer/sealers and topcoat, you only should apply a thin, "wash" coat of the self etching.

you'll probably find it cheaper at an auto paint store than doing the spraybomb plan, though. and it's the best base coat for steel auto bodies too so you won't have a problem using a quart up.

as far as adhesion/durability, Starcraft didn't apply any paint to the back side of alum trim at base of interior side panels on my 64 Starchief except that thin wash coat of zinc chromate primer. the boat has been in salt water extensively and yet the stuff still looks perfect.
