Rusted vertical shaft on Honda 130. Big problem?

Trying to figure out how serious of an issue I have on my hands. I pulled the lower unit off my Honda 130 outboard to service the water pump/impeller and I noticed that the vertical shaft has a lot of surface rust and corrosion on it. The metal still seems smooth and splines in good shape, but I'm concerned about why the shaft is rusty. Is it just a matter of cleaning up the shaft and replacing all the rubber and applying grease? Or is this indicative of a larger issue? I've attached some pics.

Some background: The boat is new to me with one prior owner. Motor and boat are 2000 year and have about 200 hrs on the motor. Used mostly in fresh water (until I purchased it a few months ago and I use it in brackish water). Before I purchased it the boat sat unused for about a year. I took it for a sea trial with a Honda mechanic and he also ran a compression test and looked over the engine (did not pull the lower unit) and said the engine was running strong and seemed to be in very good shape.

Thanks for looking and I appreciate any input.

Welcome to Iboats,

You could polish with a medium metal sand paper the whole shaft, shoud look much newer, apply a light coat of marine grease to shaft's lenght including upper splines. That's a heavy duty shaft, so the internal should be ok. Worst scenario while boating, shaft breaks and you go out of propulsion, add engine over rewing if you happened being at wot...

No, its not an issue. SS does rust, depending on the carbon content of the steel.

Thank you both for your quick responses. So it sounds like I shouldn't be concerned. My worry was that I was getting water intrusion in places I shouldn't. But there was no indication of water in the gear oil or motor oil when I purchased the boat and changed all the fluids, so looks like I'm fine.

Thanks again.

The internal leg always has water dropping down from powerhead , so it's ok for shaft and water pump to be wet, apply marine grease and will avoid further rust.
