Trying to figure out how serious of an issue I have on my hands. I pulled the lower unit off my Honda 130 outboard to service the water pump/impeller and I noticed that the vertical shaft has a lot of surface rust and corrosion on it. The metal still seems smooth and splines in good shape, but I'm concerned about why the shaft is rusty. Is it just a matter of cleaning up the shaft and replacing all the rubber and applying grease? Or is this indicative of a larger issue? I've attached some pics.
Some background: The boat is new to me with one prior owner. Motor and boat are 2000 year and have about 200 hrs on the motor. Used mostly in fresh water (until I purchased it a few months ago and I use it in brackish water). Before I purchased it the boat sat unused for about a year. I took it for a sea trial with a Honda mechanic and he also ran a compression test and looked over the engine (did not pull the lower unit) and said the engine was running strong and seemed to be in very good shape.
Thanks for looking and I appreciate any input.
