I have an 88 model suzuki DT 85.will not get over 4,000 rpm and runs hot after about 3 or 4 minutes of run time.gets out of the hole slow and is slow to reach 4k rpm.removed thermostat and entire bottom half is missing.where did it go? if it went into cooling passage and blocked them how do i get it out?water flow is pretty good at outlet and inlets are clean.what problem would cause lack of power and a hot running motor?carbs are rebuilt, timing checked, new plugs, compression 115,125,130.thanks!

MEM,

Are any of your plugs (spark) real clean looking?

The DT 85's were notorious for blowing head gaskets with just the slightest overheat.

all the plugs look REAL clean.i was having a problem with very wet plugs that were getting fouled.took it to the shop and he adjusted the timing, now it fires on all cylinders fine but runs hot.i am at the end of my rope and am about to start tearing it down starting with the intake to check the reed valves and move on to the head.

MEM,

Head gasket is gone. Don't know about the head. You may have to take it a machine shop to have it checked for warpage. Usually they're OK. You can check it yourself with a straightedge.

I do not recall where the thermostat on that engine is. You may find pieces of it when you pull the head.

Also may want to consider changing the water pump impeller. You may find pieces there too! If you have compressed air you can start blowing it into every water passage you can find. You may get lucky and find the missing pieces.
