Looking for some help please. I have a 72 50hp hydro electric shift motor that runs great on muffs, but is hard starting on the dock. It will also bog while driving sometimes. I have checked spark, and fuel delivery, that seems right. I am now beyond my troubleshooting skills. The model number is 50es72c. Any takers???

Outboard engines can sound great in the driveway while having serious problems.

Do a compression check, if you don't have one you can get a compression tester from most any auto parts store.

The spark should be able to jump about a 7/16" gap with a solid blue spark. Again, you can get a variable gap spark tester at most auto parts stores.

I have 150psi and 157psi on compression test. and good spark, tested air gap tester and high speed tester as well.
Going to pull the fly wheel and clean points and check gap as well. Have a couple of wires that look suspect, going to replace them as well. Well see what happens.

The mtr has no points in it as it's cd ignition. Did the spark jump a 7/16" open air gap ?? You can also pull one plug wire at a time when it's running to see if you have a dead cyl.

Yes I have 7/16" spark, ran both cylinders like that. Pulled the flywheel and cleaned with contact cleaner. Ran much better, even started without putting into start/run position. By the way what does cd ignition mean?

If it will jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester, there's nothing wrong with it. Put the flywheel back on it and torque it to 100-105 ft lbs.

In the 70s, CD ignition was short for capacitance discharge ignition. I remember these engines as being 'torky' little things back in the day. Swung the same diameter of prop as the V4s too, until 1975 when the brought out a smaller gearcase

definitely torky little motor. Hope I fixed the glitch. Speaking of props, mine says 13-24. 24 can't be the the pitch can it? Sounds way to steep for the motor.

Re: Runs great on Land 1972 50hp

Had some issues with the motor, man I just can't figure it out. We used the trolling motor all week, the lake isn't very big so it wasn't to bad. It starts and sounds like it's running at high rpms and never settles down to an nice idle. When I trim it down full it kills it and then won't start. I found that I have fuel coming out of the carbs when it just sits after it fails. It's probably just needs the right touch to get it all in working order. I won't go to the local marine repair place anymore because it's done nothing but get worse everytime they touch it.
Hers a pic of the markings on the prop, I couldn't find any others.

The 'WI 1326' to me looks like a reference/order number stamped on by a repair shop for tracking/billing purposes. The prop could be an OMC prop. The part #, dia, and pitch are usually on the end of the hub covered by the propnut and washer

Thanks I'll look at that.
