I had this boat running like a champ 2 days ago. I take it out today and it starts fine. I get no more than 100 feet from the launch and it skips out of gear? That's what I think anyway. It will go into gear only for the first 1000-1500 rpms then it skips out when increasing rpms, where do I start? It's. '73 70hp Chrysler outboard, I just got a manual and plenty of time....

Model and Serial number might help. First thing I'd check would be to see if the prop has spun. If that checks out, verify your control cables are working and adjusted correctly, then check your lower unit gears and the clutch dog etc. Good luck...

If it is indeed skipping out of gear and the prop hub is not spun, you can disassemble the lower unit and re-grind the drive dogs square again with a dremel and a carbide bit. ALTERNATIVELY, you can reverse the dog clutch for a very temporary fix, depending upon how badly rounded the drive dogs on the forward gear are.

The first photo shows the forward gear off the shaft and clearly shows the three drive dogs inside the gear ring. The second photo shows the two gears, pinion, and dog clutch as they are arranged inside the gearcase. In these photos, the dog clutch is engaging the reverse gear. If it were slid forward, it would be engaging the forward gear.

Drive dogs need squared surfaces to remain engaged. With age the sharp sides wear and round off.
