Hi all, I'm new to the forum, and not experienced with fixing boat motors, but I'm generally good at fixing simple problems with motors.
I just bought an 86 Evinrude 50 HP, looks like a two cylinder. It's an old boat, but I didn't want to spend too much money on this (not that I have any money to spend!) I figured it might need some care, as the whole package with trailer, boat and motor was only $800. The former owner said he just had it in the shop (his favorite mechanic, the only "one" he would use) and had "the carbs worked on." That tells me he thought he had a carb problem.
Anyway, It seems fine at half or full throttle, at least it's good enough for me. The prop is kinda dinged up a lot, so I'm not too worried about vibration coming from the motor. I took it out on the lake the other day and ran it for a couple of hours. The motor seems to push the boat up out of the water ok and run smoothly.
The problem is that I can't get it to idle, either out of the water on the hose, or on the lake. I try to idle down, but it slowly bogs down and cuts out. It's a little hard to start in this condition when it cuts out too. I replaced the fuel couplings, as I figured out they were no good, so the fuel line is full of gas all the time.
Reading the other posts on this forum, it seems to me I have a problem with the idle jets being clogged. Could somebody please explain how I might clean them?
Also I figure I'll do the Seafoam thing, looks like it can't hurt.
Any info much appreciated, thanks in advance.
