running with no oil

While coming back in after a day of fishing over the weekend, my motor started to choke and died. After I started it, it did not sound the same. I found out that I ran out of 2 cycle oil. I was running roughly 30 minutes on it dry, driving slow.
After adding oil to it, engine runs fine now.
Do you think that I messed up my engine in anyway?

Re: running with no oil

30 minutes with no oil at any speed would have done your engine in for sure. From your post, I gather that you run an oil injection 2 stroke, was there no alarm when you ran out of oil? did the main reservoir run out and the one under the cowl still have some? Compression check is in order if you think you ran out, but I don't think you went without for 1/2 hour... Best of luck.

I would have opted for a tow rather than risk running my engine without proper lubrication. Maybe that wasn't an option for you...

You might want to consider doing a compression check. Look at each spark plug as you go through the test... look for any metallic debris on the plugs...

In theory...you probably did compromise your engine, but to what degree is anybody's guess at this point.

Walt

I need to learn to type faster. No one had yet to respond when I started my reply. Now I sound like a frickin' parrot! Sorry...

Walt

Re: running with no oil

Many of the newer motors have a low oil level alarm plus a limp mode to save the motor. I'm not sure about the 1990 75 Merc, but it sounds like that is what happened. When the oil level gets low the motor will run rough under throttle and will not get much above idle speed. It will idle like a champ. Is this what happened? If so, your motor is probably alright but a compression check would be a good idea.

The part about adding oil and it running fine now also makes me think this is what happened. When you added the oil, you reset the alarm.

The oil tank needs to be checked/topped off every time you fill up with fuel.
