Running Temperature

I have a 1997 Oceanrunner 150. 250 hrs. I was wondering what temp it should run at. When going along, the temp is great, and about 140 degrees. Idling around pulling up the anchor or just moving very slowly, the temp creeps up to 180. I see this and pick up a bit of throttle and the temp cools back. Does this indicate I should put a water pump kit in it. The pump was done about 12 months ago just before I bought the boat.
What is normal and should I be worried.

I agree with TD. BTW - Do you have a water pressure gauge on that motor? That motor will have 30+PSI at full throttle and mid 20s at cruise.

Salt water engine? May be full of salt causing it to overheat.

Re: Running Temperature

At idle/low speeds you are making full use of the blades of your impeller. If worn, this is when you would notice it most at the higher speeds ram induction takes over and the blade condition is not as critical.

As far changing out after 1 year's usage, in silty/sandy/muddy environments that could be normal.

Re: Running Temperature

Thanks,
I may have a pressure gauge. I had a extra water gauge I was not sure what it was. I will check. It is used in salt water and flushed each time. Are impellers hard to replace or is it a specialist job.

You will only see "ram induction" on engines with a low water pick-up such as a Merc CLE, Bobs low water nosecones or the newer BRP Magnum gearcases.

Re: Running Temperature

I have a standard Merc lower unit with water pickup holes on both sides of the lower unit, the same way they have been building their standard lower units for years. The holes are set into grooves aquadynamically designed to force water into the holes. I call that ram injection because that is what it is. The faster you go the more water you ram into the hole.

You can see the same type of thing on the sides of airplanes where they are aerodynamically designed to pick up ram air to operate air conditioning systems and other systems requiring cooling.

Re: Running Temperature

Be careful you are running that engine way 2 hot, Mine is 120/130 at WOT trolling at 130/140 with a water temp of 50/60 degrees. My set-up is dual temp Gauges with sender connected, I can clearly see a 5/10 degree difference on each side which is normal.
