What's better for running an outboard off the lake? Muffs or a large container filled w/ water? Why?

Thanks,
Steve

I use the muffs all the time...a lot easier and quicker than filling the barrel and for just flushing, uses a lot less water!...

If the muffs work-use them for convenience. If not then the barrel is needed-to cool engine.

Unless the barrel has a faucett at bottom for letting water out while pouring new water in, in a short time will have a heated & oily barrel not suitable for cooling properly any engine. Use muffs...

Continuous flushing in tank/barrel raises the water temperature which can lead to engine seizure. Make sure water temperature does not exceed 77?F [25?C]. Excesive flushing can introduce carbon into water and adhere to the engine cooling system and degrade its ability to cool the engine properly.

Happy Boating

Either way cools the engine but the muffs are a 100 times easier to use and you don't get stuck with the mess, you probly won't find alot of guys that use a barrel unless they have small outboard.

If you are doing a Link 'n' Synch use the barrel to provide back pressure for the exhaust. All other times I can think of you will be happier with the muffs.

Er, what year, model, etc. of engine?? Some older johnnyrudes can't be ran on muffs. Doubt that's your case, just sayin'.

Motor: 1997 Force 90

Just looking to verify start, idle, general condition.

Water flow using muffs? Open valve half-way? Full open?
Obviously prior to starter the motor, but is it possible to damage the impeller with water from the muffs flowing when the motor is not running?

I have uses all 3 methods with great success depending on the results needed . The muffs for a quick easy run up is not going to tell you a dang thing about the impeller --even if you see a slight surge in water out the ports or prop . Barrels work sorta for that but a lake is going to be the true test . I muffed an EvilRude not long ago that ran like a dream -- Then, went to the lake only to have No (or very little) water when ! fired up at the dock . I found 3 wanna-be blades left on the impeller when i replaced the it.

Well..... I gotta' take exception to that statement. The lake I go to routinely gets into the 90's in the summer.

If you have a reason for running in a tank (troubleshooting or adjusting carbs) and are concerned about overheating then just slip the muffs on before lowering the engine into the tank.

if you have contankerous neighbors, a barrel does keep the noise down.
