Hi, I want to run the engine I removed to be sure there are no obvious issues before I go any further on the boat restoration. It is an inline 4 cyl mercruiser 140 hp from 1986. Can this be done, does anyone have some info on things like a temp starting switch install and where I can connect a water supply, etc...
Thanks in advance for helping.

Connect the water supply to the port you pulled the line that comes from the drive off of.

Connect the fuel supply to pump that was connected to the tank.

Then all you need is a battery hook up you main power and ground.
Then all you need is four alligator clips with about six feet of wire 12g or larger.
one jumper goes to positive side of coil and positive on battery the other gets connected to start post on starter you can touch it to any where that has power to crank it over.

There's a quite a few good videos on youtube showing the how to,
I would use a cut off water hose from spigot to inlet tube back of thermostat housing, that supplies you with butt loads of h20,
for fuel i used a 3' fuel line going from gatorade bottle ( hose size hole in top) to fuel pump, 32oz seemed to run 15 20 minutes
for wiring i myself would mark and remove all wires from starter other than the big red + power wire, it stays on big lug, next a smaller gauge wire from "s" prong on starter, that's your key wire(so to speak)don't hook it up at all, we just touch it, now a good earth ground, big black wire-, from engine block to neg - side of battery (all we're using here is just starter and coil) i would mark and remove wires from plus+ side of coil, then run a single new wire down to plus side of battery, ( that's the power to points and ignition, don't hook up til ready to start) then on the neg- side of coil, just one wire to points, its already there, black wire from dist. base to neg side coil, myself would mark and remove the other wire unless i knew where and what it did, then before i start a sitting engine, i use don s method for oil priming, no plugs, live power wire to coil unhooked, don't want it to start, touch "key" to + side of battery, ( or remote between wire and +) crank motor 20 30 seconds, back of starter getting warm, stop, let starter chill, repeat, i do it 6 8 times, good oil on rockers, if ya can hook up an oil gauge, that's what ya need, i went ahead and had my fuel hooked up so carb would get a prime, now just hook up power wire to + side of coil and start her up, it's always a "her" with me, gotta keep your hand on her if ya revving it up, wants to walk a little, wish ya luck and have fun, Mark

Re: Running inboard engine out of boat 1986 mercruiser 140

Got it running tonight!!! So happy, it ran great and hasnt had a tune up yet so next summer should be fun. I wasnt getting any spark at first but when I disconnected the two wires from the + side of coil (with the jumper connected) I had spark so must have had to do with the safety switch or because it was in gear. Anyways I had to push the motor about a foot back into the garage when I was done and slipped and cut my chin but Im still smiling!!
Thanks all for your help, now I can not worry while rebuilding the boat this fall/winter.
