I'm just curious if running the boat with a torn exhaust bellows would be ok once or twice until i get the new one in the mail. Or will all the exhaust bubbles mess up the other bellows? I know it wont sink the boat. I had to store the boat over the winter with the prop up a bit because it was in my back yard and the yard slopes. The exhaust bellows tore. I hope the ujoints bellows is ok though. It should be since there isnt as much of a strech on that one. I just put new ones in last summer what a bummer.

As long as it's the exhaust bellows, no problem.

wow that was quick. Thanks.. So the bubbles wont dislodge anything in the gimbal area? My guess is when i put the prop all the way down the bellows will compress a bit and most of the exuast will probably make it out the tip of the prop anyways correct?

No, it may leak a lot, depending on how and where it's torn. You only ask if you could run it till the parts came in.

If it's a Mercruiser, you don't even need an exhaust bellows, you can get a mercruser exhaust spout, that just clamps on in place of the bellows, and doesn't need to attach to the tilting part of the outdrive, but it is a bit noisier then thru the prop exhaust, especially on plane. You can actually hear the engine run, like a glasspack.

So far, you have never mentioned what year, make, model of engine and drive you have. This wonderful "Spout" may not even be available for what you have.

sorry about that . Its a 1986 Sunbird 208CC. It has a MCM 170 3.7L with an Alpha one outdrive.

Part #9150 on the link you posted is the correct exhaust tube for your Alpha.

Not likely, possibly only if you back up into the waves, & shut the motor off abruptly, nor is it likely as long as your motor is running and also if your boat is stationary, running or not. Plus, there is also usually a rubber flapper in the pipe inside the transom to help prevent this.

Oh yeah when i redid my transome i did see little flapers in there. Like V shaped. I kind of looks like a reed cage off a twostroke motor.

Re: Running boat with torn exhaust bellows.

The torn exhaust bellows is not really not a big deal at all.

When I got my FourWinns 211 Liberator it had a 460 King Cobra in it.

I pulled the drive to check the alignment and closely look the bellows over and discovered that the exhaust bellows was MISSING!

When I talked to my brother about it (I bought the boat from him, he bought it new)

He knew nothing about it. He said the Corsa Capts Call and Y-pipe was installed when he had the engine rebuilt following a winter block freeze that the insurance covered (he thought he didn't have to winterize in Calif!!!

There was enough money to rebuild the engine, add the y-pipe, "Capt Call" and some other stuff.

The guy that did the job NEVER put an exhaust bellows on it. I know this because the plastic screen that goes over the exhaust port in the drive (that's only in place with thru-hull exhaust) WAS STILL THERE!!

This boat ran with NO exhaust bellows for maybe 10 years!! It didn't seem to hurt anything. When I bought the transom service kit that included the gimbal bearing, gaskets, U-joint bellows and the exhaust bellows I discovered that it didn't have one. I immediately called my brother and asked him if he knew anything about it......he said "what's an exhaust bellows?" WHen I explained it to him he said he always wondered why exhaust bubbles always came up right at the transom...and he thought it was a little loud when running the Capts Call in the out-drive mode....but he never did anything about it!

The exhaust bellows that came in the kit had holes in it.

My take on this is that you can even run as long as you want with a torn exhaust bellows, run the "tube", or even run without it! (I wouldn't though)

If the boot was not important it wouldnt be there ! boats without that design are mostly thru tansom exsaust.

I'm also interested in whether or not the exhaust tube should or should not be used in place of the bellows. I'm tired of having to reconnect one end or the other of the bellows. I always ensure the surfaces are clean, use new grounding clip, new hose clamp, and bellows adhesive. Only seems to come off when raising the outdrive in the trailering position after sitting all winter out in the snow. Always stow the boat with the outdrive down. Perhaps the rubber becomes too hard after sitting in the cold all winter and just will not flex enough.
