Re: Running boat with torn exhaust bellows.
The torn exhaust bellows is not really not a big deal at all.
When I got my FourWinns 211 Liberator it had a 460 King Cobra in it.
I pulled the drive to check the alignment and closely look the bellows over and discovered that the exhaust bellows was MISSING!
When I talked to my brother about it (I bought the boat from him, he bought it new)
He knew nothing about it. He said the Corsa Capts Call and Y-pipe was installed when he had the engine rebuilt following a winter block freeze that the insurance covered (he thought he didn't have to winterize in Calif!!!
There was enough money to rebuild the engine, add the y-pipe, "Capt Call" and some other stuff.
The guy that did the job NEVER put an exhaust bellows on it. I know this because the plastic screen that goes over the exhaust port in the drive (that's only in place with thru-hull exhaust) WAS STILL THERE!!
This boat ran with NO exhaust bellows for maybe 10 years!! It didn't seem to hurt anything. When I bought the transom service kit that included the gimbal bearing, gaskets, U-joint bellows and the exhaust bellows I discovered that it didn't have one. I immediately called my brother and asked him if he knew anything about it......he said "what's an exhaust bellows?" WHen I explained it to him he said he always wondered why exhaust bubbles always came up right at the transom...and he thought it was a little loud when running the Capts Call in the out-drive mode....but he never did anything about it!
The exhaust bellows that came in the kit had holes in it.
My take on this is that you can even run as long as you want with a torn exhaust bellows, run the "tube", or even run without it! (I wouldn't though)
