What would be considered a prudent amount of time to run a motor in a barrel without possible ovberheating? How would you check to see if water is circulating to cool the motor if the exhaust port is just above the prop (below visibility)? Hope I am not being to simplistic but always heard "no bad questions". In particular my motor is '49 Johnson TD-20 5 hp. Thanks!

Cbras

How long do you need to run it in a barrel? 10 minutes, seems like a safe bet. You can take out the thermostat out to see if you are circulating water, I'm assuming you don't have a pee hole to watch.

Been there, Cbras. Set the water level in the barrel where it would be on the engine if it were mounted on a transom. . . so you can see the exhaust and water spray. Then you can run her there indefinitely.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
