Running a Force at 100:1

Hi All

I was just cruising youtube and saw a 1977 Evinrude running Amsoil-Saber Professional at 100:1 mix. Anyone heard of this? Does it work on all engines, or is this guy just waiting for a "BANG"?

Cheers

Re: Running a Force at 100:1

Well...
First off Saber professional isn't even meant to be run in an outboard. It's purpose is for chain saws, leaf blowers, etc. Saber outboard would be the correct stuff.

Even at that, Amsoil's wording is "designed for pre-mix applications as lean as 100:1 ratios or richer". That says to me that a 100:1 mix is not the cover all mix for every engine out there, just that the oil will work in an engine designed to use a 100:1 mix. I would stick to what Force recommends for a mix. I don't foresee the gains of running a leaner oil ratio outweighing the risks.

Re: Running a Force at 100:1

I tied it for one 20 gallon tank on my 1988 125HP motor. I was wondering if there would be less smoke, but it made no difference. A 2 stroke is a 2 stroke. Can't run as smokeless as a 4 stroke. I'm not sure if there is any advantage in running a leaner oil ratio. I went back to regular 50:1 oil ratio.

Some folks will try anything. If they don't get a pile of shrapnel right away they claim it is safe. 100:1 in a Force would be dumb, dumb, dumb.

I dont like to post a link but.....

I just thought it would run cleaner. This Evinrude seems to burn clean.....and I have no ties to the manufacturer, but there are a few videos like this on youtube.

Bags not being first to try it out. I think Frank or Jerry have a spare engine around that they could use as a test bed :)

Not even on a bet would I use any oil at 100-1.
I don't like rebuilding all that much.J

Re: Running a Force at 100:1

No thank you! Not even on my junkers! 100-1 is acceptable at low rpm but my engines never see anything but full throttle anywhere but no wake zones. The risk is just not worth the savings in oil and plugs.

Last I heard from the non-repair forum, just like elbows and a**holes, everyone has an opinion on this.

However, OMC did try specifying 100-1 ratio on their engines for a while and while lubrication was sufficient, there was not enough residual oil to prevent rust and corrosion. So, they went back to 50-1. Note that on auto-mix engines oil ratio varies from about 100-1 at low rpm to 50-1 at full throttle.

OMC also ran an experiment: If kept below 2000 rpm, an engine that had previously been run on 50-1 ratio could run on straight gasoline for a while with no damage.

If you want something that will run with less visible exhaust (cleaner?), then switch to a full synthetic oil.

In my experience, it SEEMS to smoke less.

But it lacks some of that sweet 2 cycle aroma. :(

The link you posted says Amsoil Saber , not Amsoil Saber Professional.

And the utube video was posted by an Amsoil dealer.

I like Amsoil products, but you always have to consider the source when given anecdotal evidence.
