IS IT OK TO RUN MY MERC 9.8 WITH A HOSE HOOKED UP TO THE FLUSH ATTACHMENT? I REALIZE IT SHOULD BE IN A TANK BUT I DONT HAVE ONE.

HI Wooly

Now - i am not a Merc Expert - but the water must pass in through your water pump, when running. I think the flush attachment leads the water in a different way - and if so, your cooling wont function. I´d advise you to buy a set of "earmuffs" with hose attachment, if you havent got a barrel.

If it helps at all: on my 9.8 Nissan, the manual says to flush the motor (with the flush attachment) while running, but also making sure that the water intakes are covered with tape, assumably to keep the water in the motor instead of draining out through the water intakes.

Run the motor with flush assembly but not wide open in gear. Will cause engine to "run away" with no pressure on prop.

I believe your water intake it located on the bottom of the cavitation plate. There is an attachment specific for this type of intake. Ear muffs do work but they don't attach to the lower unit in the "usual" manner.

If sufficient water flow is supplied to the water intake on an outboard (stern drive, etc) it does not hurt a thing to run the engine "out of the water". You can even engage the prop...but obvious precautions and safety measures must taken before you do.

Walt
