1997 Johnson 90 horse SPL outboard
Yesterday, I had to replace the impeller in my boat. I was preparing for a trip to Lake Champlain and dropped it in the tub to fire it up and make sure all was well. She started right up and pee'd just fine. I shut it off and then restarted and the impeller quit working as it stopped peeing. So, ran to the local marina and picked up a kit. Dropped the lower unit, installed the new impeller and when I fired the engine up the new impeller did its job but the boat idle was excessively high and seemingly climbing so I shut it off immediately. When I installed the lower unit, I had the shift handle in neutral and the lower unit in neutral. Tried it again, same result. To disconnect the shift linkage, I did have to disconnect the throttle cables and move them out of the way along with the carb air box. Also, once everything was reassembled the shift control was very stiff and I had to really push it hard to move it to fully open the butter files (with boat off). I suspect disconnecting the cables to address the shift linkage is the culprit, but I have no clue as to how to approach trouble shooting and getting the RPM's back to normal level.
Thanks for any help/feedback
