Hey all, I have a Rule pump with 3 wires, black - neg, brown - pos and brown with white stripe - man/pos. I want to hook this up to a on/off toggle switch.

I'll run the black to my buss bar on the fuse panel. Can I ignore one of the brown wires and just run the other brown to the switch ?

Thanks

You can ignore the plane brown one, and hook the brown/white to your switch. What you give up is letting the pump have the ability to automatically pump any water out when you are either not there or not noticing the water yet. For a trailer boat, that's marginally acceptable. For a moored boat, you will want the automatic capability. Run the brown wire directly to the battery (through a fuse) if you want the automatic capability.

Thanks Gozierdt. Always trailered and stored indoors.

Re: Rule bilge wiring

I need to further this discussion for my current problem. I am replacing a Rule Manual 500 GPH with a Rule Fully Automatic 500 GPH. This unit has an internal float switch and does not require a float switch be installed. My old manual pump required me to turn it on when I remembered to do so. I have a 1997 Tracker 17V with mega rivets so it takes on water fairly quickly and I don't want to be burdened with manual on/off anymore. I want fully automatic. I trailer the boat to and from. There is a BILGE swith at my console that is ON/Off only. The old pump has a brown and a black wire (2 wires only). The new one has a black, brown and brown/white. The half @#% directions (wiring chart) says...brown/white - manual override switch....brown - automatic....black - negative to battery. This contradicts the above post regarding the brown wires.

Do I follow the instructions above and attach the all brown wire directly to the positive terminal on a battery and then match the other two wires. If so, do I need to turn the bilge switch to the ON position when out on the water, or does the on switch now become a manual override switch ?
Thanks much for any help.

Thrillz, your wiring diagram is exactly what Gene described, no contradiction. No sure why you thought there was.

Just be sure to fuse-protect both the brown and brown/white wires.

I have reread the thread and do believe we are saying the same thing, sorry. To make sure...
1. Plain brown to positive on battery (fused)
2. Brown/White to positive to On/Off switch (existing wire)
3. Black to Negative to On/Off switch(existing wire).
This set up will allow me peace of mind that the bilge will automatically turn on. The switch will be only manual.

Yes, that will prevent you from turning off automatic operation from the switch, so auto will always be available as long as there is battery power. I recommend disconnecting the battery or removing the fuse on the automatic wire (brown) while trailering to prevent the float switch from engaging the pump because of bumps in the road. Make sure to hook it back up before you launch!
