Ruined?

Just took out my 1983 16' Bayliner with a 85hp FORCE. It ran good for an hour or so, but when I went to take it around the lake once more, it ran good for about 20 min, then made a loud squeaking noise, and started smoking. I shut it down, and popped the top. Looks like it was not cooling correctly? I checked the intake, and it was clean. It might be the fuel/oil ratio wasn't correct. What should it be? Can anyone help. It still turns over, and fires, but wont start. Could I have warped a cylinder? I pulled the plugs and they are really dry.

Re: Ruined?

Usually when a motor overheats it will not start for a couple of hours. I would check to see if the impeller is still in working order. Before you do this you may want to order one. It probably would not hurt to replace it anyways. If your plugs are really dry you are running too lean. It is best to see a little residue on them. You might want to consider backing the mixture screws about 1/8 turn counterclockwise. You can buy a compression tester for around 30 bucks. YOu should test this to make sure the cylinders did not get damaged

Thanks eurolarva, It has been garaged for a year, and this was the first it was ran since last summer. I will check all those, and get back with the stats. thanks.

If the motor overheated you should take the head from the block and check the head for warpage, check the cylinder sleeves for scratching or boring. If the cylinder sleeves are scratched then you are headed for an overhaul, probably by boring out the sleeves and using oversize piston and rings.

If the cylinder sleeves are scratched then you are headed for an overhaul, probably by boring out the sleeves and using oversize piston and rings.

But most importantly, you should make sure that you found the cause of the overheating: faulty water pump and impeller, damaged water pump pipe grommet, obstruction of the water pipe due to sediment, etc.

The cause has to be determined and make sure to install an overheat buzzer available for your motor so you don't cause damage.
