What should the setscrews on the carbs be turned back to after bottoming out? I can only find one setscrew on each carb. It is a high speed or a low speed adjustment setting? One turn out, 1.5, or what? I tried to do it by ear and it seems to run better with them in way too far and do not want to lean her out too much but don't know. The engine is a 93 year model I believe.<br />Ben

Start at 2 turns out and go from there. 2 1/2 turns out is usually about right. Those are the low speed needles. High speed jets are fixed. If your having problems at idle and the lync and sync is good, then you may be due to rebuild the carbs. But, try the setting richer.

I have a 95 28 hp johnson,........... A little smaller, but I bet are similar. My manual said 2 1/2 turns...........Ran like crap. I fiddled with it for days and couldnt get it adjusted just right.......Took it to a buddy of mine, works at a marina but was busy at the time, seated the screw and 1 1 /2 turns, got it just right even without him hearing it run..........He had me go for a test ride on my own since they were lined out the drive with repairs coming in.............Bottom line is the manuals cover so many different sizes and yrs of motors.........Just cause the manual says 2 1/2 that may be wrong............Good luck... I did the rebuild myself.... really easy to do with a little mechanical ability.

As I said, 2 turns out is a starting point. Might run better at 1 1/2, maybe 2, maybe 2 1/2. Just have to start somewhere and work with it until you get it right. As far as a lean condition, most times that is the cause of an erratic idle, but will not affect the engine once underway(As in running lean and burning a piston). That happens when a high speed jet becomes clogged and then the cylinder is starved for fuel and oil which cools and lubricates the combustion chamber. Then you have a problem!

Yeah I was a little worried about running lean.....After all the manual said 2 1/2 turns......I have since kept my eyes and ears open, and have checked the plugs on a regular basis, and they have a nice tan/brown color with a little bit of wetness on the plug............Dont get me wrong, I wasnt trying to say your advice was incorrect, I was just offering some advice on some of the problems I had run into.
