Does a twisted rub rail in spots indicate anything more than bumping the dock too hard several times or can it mean the hull is separating from deck?
Also, is replacing the rub rail a really expensive job, on say a 22 footer?

Sorry, Capecliff. Not familiar with your rig. Just bought 105' of insert and only need about 40'.

Let me know how you make out.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: rub rails

Separation, I doubt it. Chances are the original installer went cheap on the fasteners (spacing and maybe type?). Got to use stainless sheet metal on glass. It's the only thread type that will grab in glass and I like to space every 6". One thing that I have started doing is running a bead of 5200 along the back. I assume it's a vinyl or PVC with insert? Very easy to replace. Just changed out an old aluminum channel with PVC and found that the hardest part of the whole project was inserting the rubber. If it needs replacing, check Hamilton Marine. Have them send a catalog. It has all of the PVC profiles and the best prices that I have found.

Check out this site's video clips that explain the different types and show installation: http://www.diymarine.com/diypages/rub_rail_video_clips.htm

Re: rub rails

I am in the process of repairing my bumprail.
After years of using the bumprails in docking operations(our dock is on an open body of water and there is always a tidal current going one way or the other), the screws just worked there way loose. THey were set in the seam between the hull and liner as well, so they didn't have a lot of glass to hold on to. I am in the process of filling in the seam with 2 part paste, and then I will redrill all the holes. I will probably put some 5200 on the threads as well. But I was told on another board that this was overkill, and that the rail should be somewhat "sacrificial", designed to give way before the glass does. That makes sense to me, but I have already started the process, so I believe I will finish. I still believe that in a hard enough bang, the 1" screws will give before the hull or liner cracks. Not that I plan on banging anything that hard, but stranger things have been known to happen.
