Hello,
My RPM range is around 5000 - 5500 max is around 6000 wot. What is everyone running prop wise to acheive this rpm? I'd like to hit 45-50 mph but I rather protect the motor against over revving or overloading. What would be my ideal pitch?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: RPM range

What prop do you have now??? And you can run at 6000rpm at WOT.
You have to take in the variables.
Load:how much fuel, how many people, how much in the cooler?
If your can run 6000 at all times then you can change the pitch, say from a 19p to a 21.
You have aluminum or stainless. If you have a 19 alum.you can switch to a 19 stainless. That will give better performance.
You will probably increase your gas consumption by going up in size.
I always tell people it cheaper to replace an aluminum prop than change the shaft when your stainless hits the bottom and doesn't give.
If you run in deep water all the time then I wouldn't worry about stainless or alum.If there is a possibility your gonna find the bottom then alum. is the way to go.
I fish the ocean but the ramp I use has a BIG rock in the area that we turn around in.I'd love stainless but that rock scares me as I don't have a spare lower unit.J

Re: RPM range

The only markings on the prop are "23/4R 21 MWC 250G". I have no idea, is it a 23 pitch with a 4 rake, or a 21 pitch? I want to stay with alum because of my experience level and we do 'boat to shore' camping. This is how I mangled the one I have now.
I run with around 5 to 15 gal of fuel. Usually I carry 3 people and a dog(650 lbs) and a 40 pound coolor. The weight limit is 750 and I get close to the on most trips out.

Re: RPM range

Send those #s to Michigan Prop. They should be able to tell what you have.If they can't help try Marysville Marine,In Marysville,Mi. They do a lot of prop work. Then Millers Island Prop repair in Baltimore,Md.
One of these guys should be able to help identify it.
Once you get the results. Then you can decide what prop you need.J
