RPM question

I have a 4 Winns with I believe to be a 302 V8 EFI. The thing scoots pretty good. My concern is that it is showing about 50 MPH but it is also taching about 5500. Seens a bit high to me. There is no red line on the tach. How much is too much. I would hate to blow the thing up. Will a different prop slow the rpm? Just curious. Thanks for the replies.

Re: RPM question

5500 IS too high. And it is most likely a 305 GM block.
Your prop is most likely too small pitch.
Go to prop section, give lots and lots of info on your boat like size, year, weight, etc. Then the engine and drive. Make, size, gear ratio, etc. Then the prop. Pitch, Diameter, make, and any and all numbers on it. They will get you set straight.

Re: RPM question

You should ask this in the prop section but I have the 5.0 OMC in my Four Winns 190 Horizon and it's recomonded WOT is 4400 but some go as far as 5000. open the doghouse and on the left side their should be a sticker that shows everything. What prop do you have? I am running a 14-1/4 x 19p SS prop at WOT I am at 48 MPH and 5000 RPM and that is trimmed up about 1/8 of the way, without trim I am at 42 MPH and 4800 RPM. Yes 5500 is too high until you fix it I would not go over 5000.

Re: RPM question

You need to realize that if you are running the engine 500-1000 rpm's over max you will kill your motor. Do not run it past the suggested WOT (wide open throttle) rpm's until you get the correct prop for your boat. Even a second or two at that high of an rpm could throw a rod or cause other damage. Read thousands of dollars to fix!!

Re: RPM question

IMO any V8 that's held at WOT all day will fail years sooner than an engine that pushes the boat at nearly the same speed at 3,500 rpm. Open her up a few times a season for a few seconds, then back it down to cruising speed.

Figure it this way: How long will the car engine last if you hold pedal to the metal all the time with the car in neutral?

Re: RPM question

Engine ID in this case is as easy at looking to see which end of the engine the distributor is located on. If it's on the water pump (front end of the engine) you have a Ford. If it's on the back (flywheel end) you have a GM engine. Ford = 302/351 GM=305/350
