RPM issues...

Hello, i'm new to boating and am sure this question has been answered numerous times but I must ask again. I've got a 89' Donzi Z-22 w/ a SBC 350 and Volvo outdrive I think. The stock OMC outdrive was replaced by a previous owner as hole is there for the original controls and just outside the hull, transom? is a OMC part but the outdrive itself I was told is a Volvo (no decals and a re-paint). Anyways on to my problem, How many RPM's at full throttle should I be turning with this boat? I currently only turn around 3700 @ WOT. If im on the gas for a period of 30-60 seconds the boat falls flat on it's face and sometimes even backfires I believe through the exhaust, maybe a fuel problem. Where should I begin to investigate; fuel filter, fuel pump, timing, spark plugs, or dist. etc? Any thoughts, and also any recommendations on a good prop? Lastly, what is a recommended carb. on the SBC 350? It currently has a Weber but was thinking of replacing it with an Edelbrock or Holley 600 cfm, What sparkplugs are commingly used and what is the proper gap, and what is the proper timing and at what rpm?

Ayuh,....Ever heard of a Paragraph,..??

You've got an 89 OMC, 5.7l, probably a Cobra drive.... Sort of,... I Think....

It's starving for Fuel,... I'd start with the Fuel Filter,+ go from there.....

It should be pulling 4800rpms at WOT,... Trimmed.....

Prop advise is found in the Prop Forum,...

The Weber carb is the Same carb as the Edlebrock,+ a Holley would need Fix'in the 1st time it Backfires...

AC Delco,... MR43T sparkplugs... Probably 8?, at idle...

Good Luck,....

Ok, i've tried fuel filter, sparkplugs, and new gas with the same issues. Where do I go next with my lack of rpms at WOT?

all newer holley carbs made in the last 10 years have a anti blow back valve in them to keep the power valve from blowing in a backfire and even if you have one that doesn't have it you can add it its just a small orifice that you drive into the baseplate

Re: RPM issues...

If you are backfiring, it's an erroneous spark from a bad wire or timing is off n
