I have a 1983 Bayliner Capri. It has a Volvo penta AQ125A motor and a 270 volvo outdrive, the Carb is a solex one barrel job. It doesn't appear to have any fuel filters that I can see. I have a couple problems:
I am trying to get the RPM guage to work. It did not work when I purchased the boat. any Ideas on where I should start and what to check? Not sure where to start. Does anyone have specs or wiring diagrams for this engine/boat. wot rpm, idle rpm.
I have no idea how fast this boat should go.
Minor problem I have is that the engine runs fine After I let it warm up for a minute or two. If I try to take off from the pier with the engine cold after starting the engine will stall out if I try to give it any throttle past idle speed. If I Play with the throttle a bit I can get past the engine dying out( by throttling up and down). I also see what appears to be a black residue on the back of the boat every time I pull it out of the water (which is pretty hard to wash off). Does that mean the engine is running rich???
I have not tried adjusting the carb at all. I've tried cleaning the carb and flame aresstor with B-12 spray. Not sure how to adjust the carb. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

If you're looking for a good manual for a Volvo-Penta stern drive, I believe that Seloc publishes one. You can probably find it on amazon.

If the engine is stalling under load when cold, it may be a problem with the automatic choke (if your engine has this). I once had a similar problem which was caused by a faulty choke thermostat. I replaced the thermostat and adjusted it according to the manual, and all was well.

If it hasn't got one, go to your marine supplier and get a filter to suit your boat (water/fuel seperator is a good idea).

[I am trying to get the RPM guage to work.]

The tach runs off the negative side of the coil, could be a bad connection, broken wire to the tach or a faulty tach. The 125's don't have chokes, so until they warm up they can be a bit of a chore to keep running.
The black on the back of your boat means it's running rich. Check the flame arrestor. If it's dirty and plugged up it's just like having a choke on all the time.
You might check the gray wire from your coil to the tachometer. That is the senser wire for the tach. You also need a purple wire for power to the tach and a good ground. If all 3 are good, replace the tach.
