Re: rpm gauge?

I have just re-built my instrument panel and learned a bit about the gauges. The RPM gauge (in my case) has ground connection and a +12V connection (the 12 volts provided by the ignition switch). So you need to make sure the gauge is being powered. Then, there is another connection called "pulse" which is the actual signal coming from the alternator of the engine. The back of the gauge also has a knob with a dial consisting of numbers (2p, 3p, 4p , 5p and 6p) where you must select the appropriate number according to the number of magnetic poles of your engine's alternator. In my case, as it is an OMC 225HP, the guide says to position the knob at the 6P position. You must read the installation guide to determine the proper position for your engine.

There are also two more connections to provide electric power to the small instrument ilumination bulb.

The teleflex website contains good info (troubleshooting and installation guides for all common gauges). Here is the link to the tachometer installation guide:

http://www.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf

Hope this helps.
