Routing Fuel lines from permanent tanks

I'm rebuilding a 1969 Glasspar Cutlass 18 with an OMC I/O drive. Current fuel lines run from two tanks mountd ahead of the console port and starboard. The lines run the length of the boat (about 10 feet) under each gunnel and meet on the aft sole next to the engine at a three way valve (itlies free on the sole behind a jumpseat). I think it's more logical to run the new fuel lines (new tanks) to a valve near the console, then continue as a single line aft to the engine. Bad? Good? Also, I'd like to run that line through the center bilge channel... problems?
Thanks,

Re: Routing Fuel lines from permanent tanks

It's generally best to keep the lines as short as possible. In this particular case (since the tanks are so far forward of the motor) it seems like a 'six of one, half dozen of the other' choice, so I'd do what's most convenient.

As far as routing the line from console to motor, make sure you're using marine-grade hose, double clamped at every connection point, that's well supported along its entire length and not just laid in the bilge. Constant vibration can abrade the line.

Finally, that valve should never have been just lying loose. Get a valve that you can affix firmly to a secure surface, like this one:

I have only owned 2 boats with built in tanks. On both the fuel lines were placed up under the gunnels. I think that is the standard, and I think I understand why. Under the gunnel is a well protected area which is also well vented. Also if a leak were to occur that placement makes it more obvious. Read up on how it's done. I can say you need screw down tie wraps to attach the lines to the boat wherever they reside.

Great input! Thanks! My leaning now is to secure the three-way valve forward and run a single continuous line to the engine - via the gunnel and secured. Also, plan to add a simple shut off valve near the engine. Might be 'belt-and-suspenders' but - being an airplane pilot, I find redundency to have life extender potential.
This is a first time for me - but turning out to be exciting ang fulfilling. Good thing, thought, that I began with full knowledge of 'money-pit' outcomes!
Thanks again.
