my 84 150hp mercury starts very rough usually dies....i usually have to set the throttle up a tad .. it runs perfect has no hesitation.. runs flawlessly other wise... the only problem is when you start it .. i ran a can of sea foam through it.. and it might have helped a very little bit... it dont really bother me as long as its not going to mess anything up running it like that... ive only had it for about a month and take it out 2 or 3 times a week...once it starts i can pull it up in nutreal and it will usually stay running... should i have it looked at or just keep running it... it has not been ran much in the last 2 years.. but the guy i bought it off of says he had a new carb put on and the rest were all rebuilt... i replaced all the fuel lines and put new nkg plugs in it..(had autolight plugs in it)... should i wait and see it it clears up after i run it mroe or do i need to get it looked at?? thanks alot guys

Re: rough start?

Could be several things. Try this first. As soon as it starts trim it to level or a tad positive ta see how it acts. Get back to us.

Oh yeah, get an OEM Merc/Mariner manual for it. You will be miles ahead down tha road................

Re: rough start?

haha...im ordering a manual right now...

The engine runs perfect it really screams.... just the starting thing

i do know i stopped in the watter yesterday to take the whale fin off my lower unit to see how it did without it... and i raised my motor completly up..while i took the fin off... and when i got back in the boat i lowered the motor and started to idle off ... and it died... i had to pump the fuel line ball to get it started again... but after i did that it fired right up and never had any more problem besides the one its always had...

could the float seats be bleeding off into the motor while its shut up and sorta flodding it ... thats sorta what i think is happening

Re: rough start?

Could be any type of fuel delivery problem at idle. Could be bleed line bibs. Could be just idle timing. Hard ta tell on a computer. When ya get tha manual it will tell ya all ya wanna know and "how to" about these things in detail. Lots easier than us on a keyboard. It has PICTURES! They come in handy for 'ole farts like myself.................

Re: rough start?

ya i know what you mean... im always trying to tell people how to do things on vehicals... over the computer... its challenging sometimes...

but i pumped the ball to see if the float seats were week usually you could over power them with the ball... and i couldnt... thats what made me think they were good...
but i ordered a seloc manual... im guessing there good... got it off ebay for 30 bucks.. i read a few places were they were good... didnt actually see any other books offered besides like a tune up manual

Re: rough start?

seems like the seafoam got it running in tip top shape..... put a can in a full tank .. and filled it up at a gas station that usually has good fuel and not just a mom and pop station.... as soon as i hit the key it cranks up... no more setting the throttle up... it fires up great... even cold.....

Thanks for the help.. just trying to work out a good prop now:D

That engine does not like stale fuel. You should run about a tank a day through it.:D
