rough runnin merc

have a late 80's merc 35 and when i set at slow idle to troll(in reverse) its seems to sputter and stall.. im just wondering if i changed plugs if it would help or maybe my timing is off a touch.. any suggestions would be appreciated

I had a 40 hp Merc with the same problem and I put in new spark plugs only I went with the ones with the tab on them NOT the flat surface plugs that Merc. puts in and I gapped them .005 wider. This will help when You troll at low RPMs. Hope this helps. Jim

so put in the regular spark plugs not marine.. theyll have the size marked on them?? ya i dont like the way shes running while idle.. sometimes shes good but sometimes not. thanx for the help ill have to try that

You might want to check the conection on your fuel line . If it is lose it will suck air causing it to idel rough.Jim
