I have a 17' bowrider. When ever I come into rough water or the wake from other boats is it best to turn perpendicular to the oncoming swell? I have hit some of them the wrong way, feels like I slammed the boat against a rock.

Re: Rough ride.

I like to approach swells at an angle. If the swell is too big and you hit it perpendicular you could end up swamping the boat. :( Going parallel with them it could flip you over. I tend to think that approaching swells at, say about a 30 degree angle would be the best approach. ;) What do the rest of you think?

James

Tried the angle approach and that's when it feels like the swell SLAPS the hull.Doing about 18mph.

At about a 30 degree angle, my boat just sort of slides over the wake without a lot of bouncing. Slowing down dosn't hurt, either. Mine is a deep-V, so yours may react differently. Try it at slower speeds until you find whats best for you.

I go at an angle. My 13 Whaler floats on top of the waves, so I just go with the flow. No big pounding (unless I'm haulin A** straight into the waves (which is not very often)

if your 17 footer is a tri hull, get used to it. but slowing down and trimming your bow up, the throttling up a little just before impact to start your bow up worked for my first boat.a 1969 johnson seasport. well, it helped.
