I have a 25 horesepower Johnson that sputters and dies in the idle position. Once I get out onto the lake the motor runs fine with no problems at all. The only time that I have a problem with this motor is when I am getting ready to go out or coming in (idle speed). What would be the problem, and how could I resolve this?

------------------
Douglas plambeck

Re: Rough Idle....

I'd be leaning towards looking at the carbs.

Are they (it) getting enough fuel at idle? (fuel pump or poor fuel line connection)

Are they getting too much fuel at idle (leaky needle/seats)

Are the idle circuits in need of attention?( dirty or need adjustment)

Then if it is an older motor with points type ignition, Are the points and timing properly adjusted?

Is it spitting a lot of gas back out of the carb intake?
